It is interesting how there is such a push in this country NOT to learn your native tongue. Meanwhile in Puerto Rico English classes start in PRE-SCHOOL.

Peruvian Children Saving Ancient City of Chan Chan

The City of Chan Chan is the largest mud-brick city in Latin America and part of Peru’s history- believed to be the capital of the Pre-Inca Chimu. Now, Chan Chan is being used as a "classroom" for elementary and middle school students.

The students not only study conservation procedures but also learn how to make adobe and mud-bricks using the same techniques that Pre-Incan Peruvians used.

Cristobal Campana, head of the Chan Chan conservation team, says, “The idea is for students to be able to identify with their heritage and assume the commitment to look after it.”

Mexico Rewrites History

A new history textbook distributed free because school history textbooks are "continually being improved" says Mexico's Asst. Education Sec'y Fernando Gonzalez.

Opponents say one of the most important eras- the arrival of the Spanish - is OMITTED.

That’s right, the history books end before Cortes arrived in 1519.

Gonzalez defends the books saying the Spanish conquest should and would be studied in depth by secondary school pupils.

Latin America Mourns The King of Pop

The untimely death of controversial pop music icon Michael Jackson stunned the world, and Latin America was no exception. ...

Thousands of Latin American fans promised to remember him forever as they displayed their grief with tears, dancing, impersonations and even plans to erect statues in his honor.

In Mexico City, according to Reforma, thousands of his fans gathered around the statue of the Angel of Independence t...withan impromptu mixture of tears, music, applause and photographs.

According to El Nacional, the tribute was organized by Esteban Rubio, a 30-year-old Mexican who has spent half his life imitating Jackson and recently taught actor
Diego Luna to dance like him for his role in the 2007 movie “Mister Lonely”.

In Brazil, according to ANSA, Rio de Janeiro’s Dona Marta favela, the shantytown where Jackson filmed his 1996 video “They Don’t Care About Us”, declared itself in
mourning, and community leaders announced that they would put up a statue in the entertainer’s honor.

Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin told El Nacional that “the light he gave us on stage will continue to illuminate all of us who saw the master – pure musical inspiration”.

Chinese Tacos?

Mexican foods are slowly popping up at fast food Chinese restaurants. Sure they have 2 different menus - the chinese one and the mexican one. But I still can't get over ordering a chicken fajita from el chino!

Seems like I'm not the only one that thinks so! Two Taco Bells in Shanghai closed earlier this year. The idea was "little rice and no beans", less spicy to accomodate the Chinese palate, and let's add sombreros to the waitresses. meandchairmanmao.com explains it best:

No my friends-- or should I say amigos?--
this is not the Taco Bell you are used to.
Here in China, it's a bit more upscale:
it's actually a sit-down restaurant with menus
instead of a reader board;
nice chairs and tables instead of easy-to-clean
but incredibly uncomfortable plastic booths ...
All that, plus free chips and salsa. ...
When it was all said and done,
I would have rather had a soft-taco supreme.

Hot Dogs ... Make way for the Chihuahua!

Street food vendors are pushing more than just hot dogs these days. In fact there is an annual street vendor awards- "Vendys". This year's winner of the coveted Vendy awards goes to... Calexico Carne Asado corner of Wooster and Prince Street. You can't miss this bright yellow cart with the word
"Eat the Street" emblazoned on it. The 3 Brothers ironically named Vendley, originally from Calexico - town between California and Mexico are serious about their food! They even have a website! calexicocart.com

One of the 5 finalists was a pupusa stand
owned by Rafael Soler in Red Hook Park in Brooklyn
Soler originally from the Dominican Republic started by
sewing pants for $3 a dozen when he came to this country.
Now together with his Salvadorian wife they make pupusas.
He says, "Sometimes I don't sleep, because it's very, very hard
[but] I don't lose nothing because
I feel super happy when they come to me every weekend.
Sometimes they don't buy nothing — they say,
'Hi, paisano! You O.K.?' This is what I like.
This is better than money."

Rafael... I'll give you $2 on Tuesday for a pupusa today!

Eva Mendes the Latina super-sexy actress refuses to be compared to super-successful, multi-titled, multi-talented Jennifer Lopez.

"I would like to think I will have a more serious career than J-Lo. We may both be of Latin origin but that's where the comparisons stop. She manages her career like the head of a big corporation, whereas the only thing I care about is becoming the best actress possible."

Perhaps Eva's latest role in "The Women" is a testament to her "serious acting". She played the sex kitten, complete with bustiere and garterbelt. Talk about lost in translation! When in English you say, “You look skinny”, the English response is "Thanks!”

When in Spanish someone tells you , “Te vez flaca", the Spanish response is not as good. Your Latina ego is now shattered and you wondered if you should have had that second serving of arroz con pollo.

“Flaca” is not a compliment. And I dare you to translate into English “Gordita”. Gordita is a compliment. Any self respecting Latina would rather be gordita than a flaca!

Living Latina in the US comes with all these contradictions. So Barbara Trujillo- Gomez said it best in her introduction for her book Bárbara Por Atrás: A Latin Women’s Guide to Fitness. She says, “I will never look like those skinny models or friends for that matter because I, with pride and gratitude, am a Cuban – American woman who was blessed to be born with the asset of an ass."

Pretty bold statement!

I learned from my Tía who migrated
from Cuba, not just the language and
culture but even more basic than that:
how to cure the common sore throat or
headache, or just about any pain or
ailment you might have.

One of the first cure from my Tía that I
remember is with a common household
item found in the kitchen cabinet. I
remember when I was ten I was on
Miami Beach with my great aunts and
uncles is migrated from Cuba. They
would pull out the white Volkswagen
station wagon with black interior and
pile us up inside. We would head over
the bridge to Miami Beach and find a
spot (same spot every time) under the
large cabana. Once the car was
unloaded and the towels were laid down
my cousins and I would run to the
water.

Well, one day we were out there from 8
in the morning to 6. We were
SHISHKABOBED!

Before heading out the door, she enters
her bedroom, stands in front of the
oversized, glow-in-the-dark rosary and
makes the sign of the cross. She closes

Mexican side of her heritage.

“I don’t go around claiming it big time,”

Junot Díaz, a native of the Dominican Republic
won the Pulitzer prize for fiction for his novel
"The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao."

The only U.S. Latino writer to ever receive
the Pulitzer Prize in literature was Oscar Hijuelos,
“The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love"

Diaz' novel is about Oscar, an obese comics fan
in N.J. and his dysfunctional Dominican family.

Michael Ramirez' Pulitzer Prizein Editorial Cartoon

Michael Ramirez, of Latino and Japanese descent,
of Investor's Business Daily
has won the Pulitzer Prize in editorial cartooning.

The Pulitzers are journalism's highest honor,
and Pulitzer judges cited Ramirez's work for humor
and "detailed artistry," provocative and original.

The conservative cartoonist also won a Pulitzer
in 1994, when he worked for the Los Angeles Times.

A poll performed by the Associated Press in August 2007
reported that one-quarter of all Americans have not read a book in
the past year.

"The picture on the TV changes every five or six seconds, either by
changing the camera angle or cutting to an entirely new scene,"
writes Moody. "One researcher refers to these events as jolts per
minute, noting that as time is cut up, the brain is conditioned to
change at the expense of continuity of thought.

Americans spends 170 minutes/day watching TV,
101 min/day driving & <19 min/day exercising.

U.S. Congress says Jan 2009 analog broadcast signals will be switched off. All TV transmission will be produced digitally. Without some type of converter box non-digital TV will be useless. So in 2009 -- let your TV die a natural death.

Vatican Adds 7 New Sins- Why is J-Lo a sinner? ¡Ay Virgen!

The Vatican has announced 7 new sins due to this new age of globalization!
Bishop Gianfranco Girotti from the Vatican explains,
“You offend God not only by stealing, blaspheming or coveting your neighbor’s wife,
but also by ruining the environment, carrying out morally debatable scientific experiments, or allowing genetic manipulations which alter DNA or compromise embryos.”

Without further ado the new sins are: polluting, genetic engineering, being obscenely rich, drug dealing, abortion, pedophilia and causing social injustice.

The original 6th century broad seven deadly sins:
lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, anger, envy and pride.

Does that mean "obscenely rich" J-Lo is a sinner?
Remember the twins' diamond studded maracas?
Not if she is charitable. The Vatican says,
"The poor are always becoming poorer and the rich ever more rich, feeding unsustainable social injustice."

So, is J-lo charitable? Word around her old Bronx neighborhood says that she secretly donates to community organizations to keep them up and running and insists that she doesn't want anyone to know. Who knew!?!
And that is the underground word- so it must be true!

And so now we must look at ourselves, if you pollute - you are a sinner!
Repent and clean up after yourself!

Jose Feliciano Will Sing for the Pope

Jose Feliciano is a Roman Catholic, practicing in the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut. His Bishop, William Lori, invited Jose, his wife, Susan, and three children to the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium on April 20.

It was made known to the “Powers That Be” that because of this esteemed invitation,
Jose would be returning home early from his tour.

Subsequently Bishop’s Office called enthusiastically wanting Jose to participate in the pre-Mass concert. Of course, Jose saw it as an immense honor.

Three songs have been chosen in accord with the Holy Father’s theme of “Hope”:
“Lean On Me,” by Bill Withers
“Que Sera,” an international hit song for Feliciano
and the Lee Greenwood classic, “God Bless The USA.”

Shakira sold her bra on Ebay to benefit children in Colombia. The charity auction sold Shakira's jewelled bra designed by Roberto Cavall and worn on her 2007 Oral Fixation world tour for $3100. The gold outfit seen here on the left was also sold for an amazing $2716. Shakira's fans didn't just want her clothes though. A fan also bid $14,000 just to meet her. The $76,000 raised goes to Shakira's Bare Feet Foundation, which is building a school for impoverished children in northern Colombia.

The hospital suite was fully furnished with privacy screens, a brown leather couch, wooden floors and two giant plasma TVs. Jennifer reportedly had a pastel-coloured couture hospital gown and coordinating robe which was specially designed for her.

Sean Combs, "P. Diddy", himself a father of twins, is sending his ex-girlfriend Sean John baby clothes. He said, "I’m so happy for her. It’s such a blessing. She is going to make a great mother.”

Jennifer Lopez has sold the first pics of the twins to People magazine and OK magazine for a record-breaking $6 million. Christina Aguilera, who gave the world its first look at her son Max in US magazine has reportedly fired her manager and her publicity firm BWR who also reps JLo's, for raking in a much lesser amount for her pictures. Angelina Jolie-Pitt and her husbandsold pictures of Shiloh to People for $4 million, but gave all of the proceeds away to good causes. Christina Aguilera sold her child's pictures for a reported $1.5 million; Nicole Richie received $1 million for her baby.

Venezuelan Government CANCELS Alejandro Sanz Concert

Judge Rules Hispanic Voting Rights Were Violated

Port chester, New York, just 25 miles from NYC with a population of about 50% Hispanic has violated the Voting Rights act of Hispanics.

A U.S. judge ruled Port Chester's election system denies equal participation for Hispanics in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the landmark law associated with the civil rights movement of the 1960s. "The at-large election system for electing members of the board of trustees prevents Hispanic voters from participating equally in the political process in the village," Judge Robinson wrote in the 56-page ruling. Robinson ordered the Justice Department and the village to submit proposed solutions.

Fighting Deportation

I.N.S. vs. State Law vs. Federal Law Lopez, a Mexican national living in South Dakota, was convicted of aiding and abetting the possession of cocaine. According to INS, an "aggravated felony" is deportable.

Well, the crime Lopez was convicted of is a felony-only under South Dakota law but ...only a misdemeanor under the federal Controlled Substances Act. So can he be deported or not?

The question went in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. December 2006, the Court ruled 8-1 that a drug crime must be a felony under federal law in order to count as an "aggravated felony" for purposes of the INA, and therefore deportable.

Now there's Mory-Lamas, Native from Peru has been in custody since 2004. In brief, Mory-Lamas has been in detention for the last four years fighting deportation.

According to, H. Nelson Goodson from El Conquistador Newspaper - Mory-Lamas ... has already served his sentence for the conviction of possession and remains incarcerated (detention) by U.S. Immigration. Why hasn’t the U.S. Department of Justice resolved Mr. Mory-Lamas case? In this case, Mory-Lamas should be afforded the same legal rights provided by [the Lopez case].
